S1 Physical Education Course Plan 20/21

  • Curriculum for Excellence ‘Benchmark’

    Gross and Fine Motor Skills

    • Uses eye/hand and eye/foot coordination as part of skilful performance.
    • Performs specialised movement skills/techniques with precision.

    Determination + Resilience

    • Demonstrates understanding of the positive link between effort, perseverance, and personal achievement.
    • Recognises the variety of emotions that are associated with performing and the impact they have on behaviour and performance.
    • Develops the ability to manage emotions to enhance performance.

    Activity

    Football

    • Pupils will learn how to perform a range of skills which are required to be an effective performer through football.

    Physical Skills that will be focused on are: –       Passing –       Dribbling –       Shooting –       Controlling the ball Lessons will involve a range of activities which will see pupils work with a partner, in small groups or larger teams to develop their own and others ability within the class.

    Coordination & Fluency •      Demonstrates efficient movement that leads to successful outcomes. •      Evaluates the key elements of movement that lead to a quality performance. Communication •      Demonstrates understanding of a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and applies them appropriately and confidently in practice and performance environments, for example, role of umpire/referee.  

    Activity

    Hockey Pupils will learn how to perform a range of skills which are required to be an effective performer through Hockey. Physical Skills that will be focused on are: –       Passing –       Dribbling –       Shooting –       Controlling the ball –       Tackling Lessons will involve a range of activities which will see pupils compete in small sided games as well as working with peers to enhance their skill level and understanding of the game. Pupils will also take on a range of roles within lessons to enhance their communication skills.

    Stamina •       Takes responsibility for sustaining moderate to vigorous physical activity that provides challenge. •      Measures heart rate, pays attention to breathing rate and ability to talk, in order to monitor body’s reaction to physical activity. •       Creates, implements and monitors personal goals to improve stamina. Speed •       Creates, implements and monitors personal goals to improve speed. •      Demonstrates speed in physical activities for successful performance. Core Stability and Strength •       Creates, implements and monitors personal goals to improve core stability and strength. •      Demonstrates core stability and strength in physical activities for successful performance. Flexibility •       Explains the benefits associated with flexibility to everyday life. •       Creates, implements and monitors personal goals to improve flexibility. •       • Demonstrates flexibility in physical activities to support successful performance.

    Activity

    Fitness and Orienteering Pupils will participate in a range of orienteering activities as part of our Outdoor Learning within PE.  This could include map reading, timed orienteering courses and photo orienteering. Within the fitness lessons pupils will discover a range of different types of fitness and participate in a wide range of different exercises which they can undertake out with school. Pupils will be working individually and within a small group to complete tasks throughout this block.

    Respect  & Tolerance •      Contributes to an inclusive ethos, showing mutual respect in practice and performance environments. Cue Recognition •      Prioritises the order in which cues are responded to.

    Activity

    Social Dance Everyone’s favourite time of the year. All S1-6 will be participating in Social Dance where they will learn a wide range of Scottish Dances from the traditional Gay Gordons to a school favourite the Patty Cake Polka. Lessons will include a mix of traditional and more modern music to really get the pupils thinking about their movements and timing with music.

    Balance & Control

    • Performs smooth transfers of weight with and without equipment involving static and dynamic balance.
    • Manipulates objects with precision while maintaining balance, for example,  shot in Netball.

    Decision Making

    • Takes responsibility for decisions under pressure that lead to improved performance.

    Activity

    Netball Pupils will learn how to perform a range of skills which are required to be an effective performer through Netball. Lessons will involve a range of activities which will see pupils work with a partner, in small groups or larger teams to develop their own and others ability within the class.

    Flexibility •      Performs a range of effective, dynamic movements specific to physical activities. Confidence & Self Esteem •       Demonstrates self-reliance and self-worth through engaging in challenging tasks. •       Demonstrates the value of positive relationships while working and learning with others. •      Self-assesses and acts as a peer assessor to provide constructive feedback to modify/enhance performance.

    Activity

    Gymnastics Pupils will be working individually and with a partner to learn new skills and utilise these within routines. Pupils will start the block with floor work and gradually apparatus will be introduced as pupils confidence improves throughout the block. Within the pupils routines they will be focusing on:

    • Rotations
    • Balances
    • Flight

    Kinaesthetic Awareness

    • Is internally aware when co-ordinating hand-eye/hand-foot movements to control different pieces of equipment, for example, drop shot in badminton.

    Speed

    • Moves at different speeds and changes direction quickly with precision.
    • Accelerates quickly from a stationary position in response to movement challenges, for example, reacting appropriately to a serve.
    • Demonstrates speed in physical activities for successful performance.

    Activity

    Badminton Pupils will be working with a peer throughout this whole block.  They will develop the foundation skills required to play Badminton and knowledge of the rules will be developed. Pupils will also be learning about court movement and how this helps their overall performance.
